Building an Evening Routine You Will Stick To

Evenings are when many people enjoy their skin care most. There is no rush to leave the house, and there is no sunscreen or makeup to layer on top. Still, the best evening routine is the one you will do even when you are exhausted.

Start by removing the day

If you wear makeup or water-resistant sunscreen, start with something that dissolves it, such as a cleansing balm, oil or micellar water. Then follow with a gentle cleanser. If you wore neither, a single cleanse is fine.

Add one treatment, if you want

Evenings are a common time for treatment products like serums. If you use one, pick a single product with a clear purpose and use it consistently. Stacking several strong ingredients can irritate skin, and makes it hard to tell what is helping. Some ingredients are best introduced slowly, a few nights a week at first.

Finish with moisturizer

A moisturizer seals in the routine. Some people like a slightly richer cream at night. Do not forget the neck.

Make it pleasant

Ritual makes habits stick. Dim lights, a clean towel, a few slow breaths while you massage in moisturizer. It can become a signal to your body that the day is ending.

The tired-night version

Some nights the full routine is not going to happen. Keep a backup: cleansing water or wipes by the bed, then moisturizer. Something is always better than nothing.

Keep tools clean

Wash makeup brushes and sponges regularly, and change face towels often. It is an unglamorous step that helps keep skin calm.

Do not over-exfoliate

Exfoliating a couple of times a week is plenty for most people. If your skin feels sore or looks shiny and tight, take a break.

A good evening routine should leave you feeling relaxed, not like you have done homework. Keep it short, kind and repeatable.
